New River Closure Status

FDC's legacy page lists New River Correctional Institution at 8000 NW 80th Place in Raiford and marks it temporarily closed. Reporting from 2021 described prisoners and staff being reassigned. Reassignment is a transfer, not an early release. The prisoner's DC record remains active across institutions, so the closure does not erase the custody history. The official wording should be preserved rather than changing the status to permanently closed or active.

FDC also says the former New River Work Camp is now Union Work Camp under Union Correctional Institution. That administrative change can make two valid records use different facility names. Union CI is in neighboring Union County, even though both records may use Raiford. Match the DC number, incarceration dates, and location history before deciding that the entries concern different people or a discharge.

Search New River Release History

Use the FDC Offender Search menu. Search Inmate Release Information by six-character DC number when known, or use the name and alias controls. Open the full detail and read Release Date, sentence history, and Incarceration History. A past Date Out-Custody is stronger evidence of release than a missing New River location.

1. Match the DC number and identity fields.
2. Read incarceration dates covering the New River period.
3. Check Current Population for reassignment to another prison.
4. Check Release Information for a true state custody exit.
5. Check Supervised Population for a term after physical release.

Each FDC database covers a different stage. Current Population answers whether the person is still recorded in prison. Inmate Release includes completed and scheduled state releases. Supervised Population addresses time outside prison under FDC supervision. An Absconder/Fugitive result concerns a person who stopped making himself or herself available for supervision, not a person presumed to have returned to prison.

FDC updates release information nightly and warns that data can change quickly. Current Population receives a full weekly refresh, while location and release-date data update nightly. A future Current Release Date remains a forecast. Contact Admission and Release if official paperwork conflicts with the public detail.

New River Transfer Evidence

The record fields answer different questions. Location history shows placement. Date Out-Custody marks the end of an incarceration period. Release Date records or forecasts a state release, depending on whether it is past or future. Current Population shows whether FDC still reports confinement elsewhere. A name match should be confirmed with the DC number and several identity facts rather than a photograph alone.

A court record can explain the sentence, but it may not record the precise physical transfer. Use FDC for that custody history. The Bradford jail roster does not cover New River prisoners and cannot establish a state-prison discharge.

New River Release Date Labels

A New River history may sit beside a future date in the statewide release database. FDC's public record can call that field Current Release Date, while Florida Statutes section 944.275 uses tentative release date for the gain-time projection. A tentative date can move earlier through gain-time awards or restoration and later through forfeiture. Sentence corrections, jail credit, mandatory minimums, exclusions, and agency review can also change the forecast.

The 85-percent rule for covered sentences limits how early incentive gain-time can cause release. It does not guarantee release at that point. A future date should remain labeled scheduled or tentative. Once the date passes, the historical release entry and Date Out-Custody show whether FDC records a completed state custody exit. A move caused by the New River closure should appear instead as continued custody or location history.

New River Record Contacts

The closed-site address identifies the historical institution. Statewide record questions belong to central FDC units. Give the person's DC number, name, approximate New River dates, and the exact record sought. A release event question belongs with Admission and Release. A placement or incarceration-history question belongs with Central Records.

Formal requests may use the FDC public-record page or GovQA. Ask for an existing release event, incarceration history, or location history. FDC does not have to create a new report or conduct open-ended research. Public access is also subject to exemptions and redaction.

Frame the request around the uncertainty. To distinguish closure reassignment from release, ask for the location history and the incarceration period that includes the New River dates. To verify a later discharge, ask for the release record, release date, and date out of custody. Precise identifiers help the custodian locate the correct existing record.

New River Supervision After Release

A true release from FDC custody may lead to parole, conditional release, probation, or another state supervision status. Search the same DC number in Supervised Population. That database is fully refreshed weekly, while termination dates and location updates occur nightly. A match can identify the supervising office and the dates shown for the supervision term.

Physical release and final discharge are separate events. Someone may be out of prison while still subject to state supervision. Use that route only after the release record supports an actual prison exit, not merely a closure-era transfer.

Bradford Closure Transfer Lesson

Bradford's prison geography makes the New River case especially useful. Florida State Prison, West Unit, Lawtey CI, and New River sit near Union CI across the county line. Old sources may say Raiford without naming the county or custodian. A place-name search can therefore blend distinct institutions. The county label is not enough to choose a database.

The closure is the clearest local example of why location loss and custody release are different. Reporting described reassignment of prisoners and staff in 2021, while FDC's legacy page preserves the temporarily closed label and the work-camp rename. Apply the same rule to active prisons. A person who leaves one facility can remain confined elsewhere.

Date Out-Custody, Current Population, and Supervised Population create the reliable sequence. A new prison location means custody continued. A completed release history without a current custody match supports discharge from prison, subject to direct FDC confirmation when records conflict.

Confirm New River Release Conflicts

An old article, an FDC location, a court file, and a VINE alert may describe different stages of the same custody history. The old source can preserve a New River placement. The current FDC record can show reassignment. A court judgment explains the sentence but may not state when FDC moved the person. VINE can report a custody change, including transfer or release, yet it is not a durable historical record.

Resolve those sources in order. Match the committed name and DC number. Place the New River entry within Incarceration History. Search Current Population for a later FDC institution. Read Inmate Release for a completed or scheduled state exit. If physical prison custody ended, search Supervised Population for parole, conditional release, probation, or another FDC-supervised term. The same DC number ties the stages together even when the institution name changes.

Direct unresolved fields to their custodian. Admission and Release handles release data. Central Records handles population and location history. Field Services handles supervision. Bradford County Jail has no jurisdiction over a New River state-prison record, and SmartWEB should not be used to infer what happened during the closure.

New River Records and Courts

Florida's public-record framework makes existing agency records presumptively accessible unless an exemption applies. FDC may redact protected information and does not have to create a new report, conduct broad research, or convert data into a form it does not maintain. A request for an identified incarceration or release record is more useful than asking the agency to explain a person's full history.

A court record can add legal context. It may show the judgment, sentence, credit, or a later order. It does not replace FDC's location and release records. For a closure-era move, request the FDC incarceration or location history. For a later community discharge, request the release event and date out of custody. When supervision followed, use the FDC supervision detail and the governing order for their separate roles.

Record retention also differs from online display. A missing search result does not prove that the underlying record was destroyed or that the person was released. Use the formal record path when an older New River placement no longer appears clearly in the public interface.
